Development Solutions: One Size Does Not Fit All

In this talk Professor Willis highlights the contested nature of development and the implications for development solutions. She covers a range of development solutions involving different development definitions and development actors, from governments and transnational corporations to non-governmental organisations (NGOS) and community-based organisations. She highlights how these involve the operation of power in the definition and implementation of development policies. The talk stresses the agency and actions of individuals and groups in the Global South in identifying and working towards their own development aspirations. The talk includes examples from Africa and Asia, as well as data on global flows of remittances, aid and foreign direct investment.

Professor Katie Willis is part of the Department of Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London. Her research focuses on migration, gender and development, with particular interests in transnational families and the role of migration in reproducing or challenging social inequality.
